So somewhere in the shuffle the piano bench that came with my Grandmother's piano did not make it to my house. I considered making a bench, buying a bench or just having the kids stand up to play. I was honestly leaning towards buying a bench and decided to make a cover for it when I had an idea attack!

These are our kitchen chairs.

This is the kitchen chair that our cat Tinkerbell has scratched the seat out of.

I decided to remove the seat and paint the chair and then make a new cushion for this instead of an expensive bench. My project just went from $125 to less than $5.

First I had to remove the twine and cardboard from the seat.

Then I took some leftover spray paint from the shelf project and painted the chair black.

This is right before the last coat. (It took about 3 coats).

My husband took a scrap piece of wood and marked the legs. He used a drill bit to cut out holes for the legs. He then cut the wood to size. I sprayed it black to match the chair.

I had him use this piece as a template so when I get around to updating the rest of the kitchen chairs we don't have to go through that again.

Once I had the  wooden seat cover I took some seat foam and cut it to match the wooden template.

I wrapped it with the fabric and used a staple gun to staple the fabric to the bottom of the wooden template.

I screwed some wooden blocks in a square into the bottom of the seat cover. They fit perfectly into the seat.

This is my new piano seat! If I choose to have a bench later so that there is a place to store the girls music books I can still use this chair on the other side of the living room for seating.

Materials and Total Cost for this project:

1 chair - $0 (already owned this)
2 cans black spray paint - $4.00 (Dollar General)
1/4 yard fabric - $1.25 (Hobby Lobby)
Scrap wood for seat cover - $0 (this was laying around the wood pile)

Tools Needed:
Drill
Staple Gun

This chair was garbage before and for only $5.25 it is now an amazing functional chair that I am really proud of! See below for a before and after picture. Feel free to share this on Pinterest or Facebook!

Love,
Mary Gina Carr
